Good news for amateur bakers!

July 25th, 2007 by RitaHG

OK, they probably aren’t many around here but yours truly is one.

On Monday, I decided to bake my own bread.  I followed a simple recipe that came with my new changgih-to-me KA mixer.  All went well until it says to split the dough into two baking pans of the same size.  I have them but one was glass and the other, flexible silicone.  I went ahead.  Horrors came out of the oven …..

Bread Gone Wrong!

The left one is from the glass pan and was perfect, taste and all.  The other not only look obscene but smelled yeasty and was undercooked.  As for the texture, let’s just say I dare not tap the wall with it as the paint might come off!

I don’t like throwing away food, even a disaster like this.  So, on Tuesday morning, I looked up my recipe collection and came up with this ….

Correction to Bad Bread!

Bread pudding, anyone?

PS to Lyn :  So sorry!  I was blurr about inserting images, uploaded extra and don’t know how to delete them.  :(

    Hi Rita,

Gosh your experience is so funny. But the second try came out delicious. Did you use any eggs in your preparation i.e. for the bread and bread pudding? I am trying to gather some recipes to bake without eggs for my husband and it would be nice to be able to bake the yummy bread pudding without them. Hubby very allergic to them:( But I will eat them though:)

Hahah Rita, that’s a funny experience…very VALUABLE though. Now we know that using glass pan would give better outcome! Thanks! I love making bread…but I cheat lah…I use breadmaking machine one haha!

I love making bread. I must share soon my no-fail rolls recipe – really! No fail one. LOL but your experience very funny. Now I know to stay away from the those funny looking silicone pans. Oh but bread pudding looks yummy.

Rita, can your hubby take egg substitute?

    Hi Lyn,

Don’t know about Rita’s hubby but my hubby can take egg substitute.:) I tried making meatloaf without eggs, used gelatin but I guess I used to much gelatin cos it was kind of rubbery:( Poor guy, he ate it anyway. I don’t know of any other egg substitutes in the market out there.

Lyn … my hubby is not allergic to any food and will eat anything that does not move faster than him. Thankfully he is not small, or maybe that was the cause of his size now unfortunately. LOL! Mana rolls recipe?? :)

Waterlily …. I know about those breadmachines. Great appliances!

Deborah … I did use eggs but you can make bread putting without eggs. Here is the adjustment to any regular recipe.

Bread and Butter Pudding (Without Eggs)

Slice sufficient white or brown bread (stale) to fill a good-sized pie dish, and spread each slice thinly with butter. Grease the dish, then lay in the slices, sprinkling some currants, sultanas, and sliced candied peel between each layer, adding a little sugar and spice also. Then moisten the bread with a cup of milk. Prepare a pint custard and pour over while hot, grate nutmeg on; bake as usual.

Deborah … may I be curious and ask what happens when your hubby eat eggs? If it is too personal, I understand.

I am allergic to wine, especially red, preservatives – get rashes on joints. Also, cooked tomatoes – throw up. Sun-dried ones soaked in oil are OK though. Bizzare!

Rita, my hubby starts feeling itches in his throat and if he is not careful it might lead to an anaphylactic shock. His allergy to eggs in not that bad but it is fatal with peanuts. He can’t even smell it. His throat starts itching even at the smell of it and when he did an allergy test , the doc told his to stay far far away from peanuts. so I can’t eat peanuts either:( One of his friends ate peanuts and then shook hands with him and he got welts all over his hands. So no satay sauce or kacang munching sessions ( I love peanuts) when I am here.
Thanks for the egg substitute tip:)
